Today while swimming alone in a public pool I was captivated by the reflective distortions water makes. I wished once again I had a camera to capture the squiggily reflections of the ladder on the surface or the exterior of the building chopped into segments by the gently swaying of the water.
Because my mind works in mysterious ways this then got me to thinking about all the times I have wished I had a camera handy to capture an image but didn’t. I have long thought that ‘someone’ should invent the dashboard camera so that when we are zipping along at 65-70 mph and see the sun dropping behind a mountain and reflecting on the water over which we are traveling on a bridge we can capture it for posterity. I tried shooting pastures lined with eucalyptus with the iPhone while zipping along at 55 mph and that was (1) not successful and (2) greatly frowned upon by my husband!
I have thought of other auto inventions such as the solar powered migrating visor which is always in the correct position but have dismissed these brilliant ideas because I am neither engineer nor scientist. And then today it hit me! I bet the guy who invented the hula hoop was more artist than scientist. Or the Slinky, more artist than scientist. Clearly the Rubics Cube though was more scientist than artist except for the pretty colors!
All of this creative thought while swimming led me back to one conclusion. Perhaps the answer to my need for instant recall of said images is simply to enjoy them in the moment. Really look in depth taking in all the shapes, colors and patterns.
It really is no different than the folks who video tape the entire vacation and then watch it when they get home (or not) but miss it while they are there in real time. Live in the moment.
